Online Monitoring App

App Framework, Process Improvement

ABOUT THE PROJECT

This project was done as a part of a two-member team during my internship at an export unit that manufactured intimate apparel for top international brands. The personnel working in the factory were from varied ethnicities ranging from Filipinos to Sri Lankans, Africans and South Indians. The unit is a highly technologically advanced facility that houses state-of-the-art machinery and the latest developments of the apparel industry.

However, a major issue that was noticed which was also a head-scratcher for the superiors at the factory was that the same quality failures were being spotted on the garment pieces in production despite training the sewing operators, leading to accumulated defects in the final garment, which had to be reworked multiple times. Upon closely examining the mind of an operator to better understand the causes behind this chronic quality problem, the main issue at the core of it all was discovered to be a lack of motivation.

Thus a point system based monitoring app was devised to tackle these issues where the supervisor will monitor the operators over a set list of parameters.

The app works on a simple premise of rewarding points to the operators upon a small but continuous stretch of defect-free work and deducting a few points in case of any defects caused in the garment or some specific parameters that they failed to follow.
